Black Ice

I have recently arrived home after taking the hound for a walk. One road leading across our estate was still iced over and hadn’t melted much. I would have felt safer in a car rather than having a spaniel who can change direction quickly and spontaneously.

You lucky you can take your dog for a walk mine look outside and straight back in and sat next to the fire

No snow here at all but extremely cold, our little lad decided he didn't want to walk back from the pub on New Year's afternoon, he is getting crafty.

This morning ‘s icy field and river. Note a good example of black ice . You can see the obvious but not the demon that catches so many out.

I'd bet that TV weather forecasters wonder why they're wasting their time as so many people ignore them - for those who never watch TV the weather forecasts are on the internet and even my phone tells me!

In Wiltshire for years now minor roads have not been gritted as the council concentrate on A roads, B roads and some urban through routes. So it’s not a new thing. Did your area grit minor roads and lanes then? Given your lane seems to be a notorious black spot (4 vehicles in a few days) how many of those vehicles were locals?

P. S some local farmers had grit distribution machines and basic snow ploughs. Council paid them something. Not sure that system still exists.

Also take into consideration the very recent over kill news on the snow bomb that was supposed to just about obliterate the UK, however it did not happen! Although a person is aware of the fact that conditions may be icy, one would except the gritters to be out and about?

The lane where the cars were in the hedge and van on its side is regarded as a B road. Previously that road and the road through the village were gritted. Also none of the A roads around us have been gritted. BTW the car I initially reported on was on a one track lane that was steep and different to the road mentioned in post #29.

Listen to your tyres and look at the cars temperature gauge and look at the road surface ahead, plus vehicles at funny angles or in ditches are a good guide. Be aware of where it can occur 🤣

I don’t have an answer for everything but some just expect authorities to do everything for them.

What we should really worry about is the alarming decline in posting members.
Again I ask why is the PCv Facebook site so well supported by our fellow caravanners but not the Forum.

We all have our shortcomings and may be we should start a “Mea Culpa” thread and see why so many are cheesed off.

A few weeks or so in the period before Christmas the forum was quite quiet and very few posts per day. I wondered then if migrating to the PC Facebook might be worthwhile, as the cost of running and supporting the Forum isn’t negligible.

I read Hutches post about Black Cats and was tempted to ask if they like Huss, Rock Salmon or Gurnod, subjects that cropped up in this thread on Black Ice. We can all be guilty of Fred Drift but some are more tolerant of it than others.
