BMW 3 series estate Plug in hybrid: towing performance

As a matter of interest, if you parked up and the auto hold was on, when you come back to the car does the auto hold automatically activate on start up or do you need to manually activate it again?
I think mine is a bit different to OC’s. On the MG. The auto hold needed to be switched on each time the car was started. The Mazda is the same, except that the auto hold only operates with an extra press of the brake. This is much better as you you don’t always want the auto hold operating coming to roundabouts or in traffic. It put the driver back in charge.

Sorry I don’t understand that. When starting I select Autohold then as a drive away the parking brake releases. Autohold sits there in the background. As I come up to a junction or roundabout I’m braking as normal and if I have to stop I push the brake pedal and Autohold clicks in. Where am I not in control?

Surely the auto hold should only activate if the car has come to a complete stop and is stationary for a couple of seconds?

Emissions!

Summer tyres are marginally more economical than all-season of winter tyres, because they're optimised for economy.

Police fleets get through a lot of tyres and often change from summer to all-season sets for winter.
Back in the sixties no such thing as all season tyres on our police cars. Probably why driving in the rain was a bit hazardous especially in a Landrover. Worst was when approaching traffic lights which had the big white arrow showing you the direction of the lane. Brake on that white strip and it was change underpants time especially if on a bike! 😀

I said “if I have to stop…..”. So as my foot is on the brake pedal I come to a stop, slightly increasing pressure just as you would in any car the Autohold activates. Doesn’t need a couple of seconds.

What you describe is the way my MG was. With the Mazda, the auto hold will not engage under normal braking. You need to come to a stop then give the brake a little extra pressure to engage. In this way, the driver has the choice of whether the parking brake is applied or not. It takes a little practice, but gives a bit more control and is smoother, particularly in heavy traffic.

I have no idea whether other makes do this.

Personally, I would like the auto hold on as the default. But that is not possible.

With the MG, it came on as soon as the car came to a stop. No delay. With the Mazda. It only comes on when I want it to.

Systems make to make probably vary.

That sounds the same as my Mazda. It is that increase in pressure which gives the driver the control. Much better than the MG.

Perhaps my earlier post did not make things clear.

When I said seconds, you need to hold the brake pedal down for 2 - 3 seconds otherwise you probably are not going to stop in time. I have never timed it as better things to do and it was just guesswork. 😀

Absolutely. Whist many new features have been required by EU legislation,, there will be minimum specifications set out in the legislature to define a successful importation, but each manufacturers will have their own take on how to implement it.and exactly you might vary from model to model within a brands range.

There is no point in holding up one implementation and assuming all others will precisely follow it.

Hey. Im currently driving a 24’ Tesla Model Y Performance and we are considering to trade it in for a pre-LCI G01 X3 30e or G21 330e xDrive. We have a caravan that weights about 1400 kg(max load). As I can read you all are happy with the 330e as a towing car, but what are the fuel consumption and the overall range with a caravan. I don’t think the 330e has more range than my TMYP, but I don’t have to hook the caravan off every time I have to charge. And I just want to confirm the range/fuel consumption, since I can’t find any information about it, with a caravan attached of course. I live in Norway and so far there aren’t that many trailer-friendly charging places. They are usually in a backyard, so it is kind of a hassle. With the Tesla Model Y P I have about 200-250km range with the caravan and about 500km without (riding on OEM 21" wheels).

Hi Marius, we haven't been far with the caravan yet, but in June we're going 500 miles towing our Swift Aventura 4SB so I'll check the fuel consumption and post it so that you can decide.
On one short 80 mile trip, we found that the electric motor charged up far quicker when driving on the motorway than charging at home, but of course this might reduce the fuel consumption. What we did was to 'hold' the fully charged state of the motor, until we were on smaller roads. However our car only has the 12kw motor, so only giving about 20 miles of range and it seems to use it up very quickly, even without the caravan attached. The 2025 BMW X3 has a bigger battery and better range.

Thanks for reply 😊 I think the 2025 X3 is too expensive here in Norway for what car it really is. And I like classic BMW look for the G21 3-series and G01 X3. My Tesla is a great and fast car and I almost never notice my caravan when driving. But it gives me nothing else than great performance and space. Tesla is like an iPad on wheels, but I never use half of what it can do. And track mode? Never ever tried it. Also, overload of cheap plastic in the interior and a lot of noise. I miss my old BMWs.
I have a home charger(BMW Wallbox) and it is 5km to work, so I can drive fully electric with the 330e daily. I have two kids, both forward seat, so maybe I should try one to see if the space is good enough.
I think the 330e or X3 30e will do the work for us and as far as I can read a great towing car. We will drive 1600miles this summer(to Denmark) with out caravan (Bürstner 490TK) and I was hoping to do that journey in a BMW 😊
