I currently have a BMW 520dse tourer with a manual gearbox, which tows great, I am looking at changing it for the same but an auto, anyone any experiences towing with this? Are the paddles on the steering wheel any benefit for a quick drop down while towing. Caravan has a mptl of 1500kg.

Automatics, or at least good automatics, will drop down a gear easily/quickly enough automatically (pardon the pun) when towing so it's easy to ignore the paddles and let the transmission ECU do the work.

Paddles are great when you want to be a (responsible) boy-racer - but with the van on the hook ?
