What do you want to know about the Bosal detachable hitch?
Hi Lutz

I Have a Bosal bar in fact i have had two the first one was returned as being faulty but now i'm not so sure. If you are familiar with this towbar you will know it has a rotary knob which is lockable with a green and red indicator window. Then the bar is located correctly it shows green now this all works fine but with the knob locked it can still be turned in the clockwise direction about 10mm which makes the engaged hitch become loose and i can wiggle the ball around quit a lot.Now in practice when I am towing and traverling over a ripperly road surface the towbar makes quite a knocking noise as though the hitch has come loose like the knob has rotated it is quite worrying at times. The first bar i had did this and was returned after a short time and now this one is the same after less the 1000 miles I wonder if any one else has this problem. The bar is a genuine Honda accessory made by Bosal who refer me back to Honda when i try to talk to them and my Honda dealer doesn't know anything about towbars.

Any thought's on the subject would be appreciated

Thanks

I'm sorry I'm not going to be of much help but I thought I'd reply all the same just to let you know that I'm not ignoring you. I had a look around the office for samples of a Bosal towbar so that I could analyse their design for possible flaws but to no avail. It's always the same, everything else was there except what I was trying to find.

Having said that, there certainly shouldn't be any slack in a detachable towbar system. If you're not getting any joy from Bosal nor from Honda, I'd go to a reputable dealer specialising in towbar fitting and get an independent expert opinion from him.

ps: I presume that the Bosal is lockable like all the others. Does the problem still exist when the knob is locked and the key withdrawn? Maybe the Bosal system has 2 latching positions, a primary latch and a safety back-up secondary latch. Maybe you were only in the secondary position but if this were the case, the knob should not be lockable with the key.

I have been using a detachable Bosal hitch for about two years now and during the last trip towing a 745 kg caravan I noticed the hitch gets loose with a significant play. Here is my response to the issue - 1.5 mm stainless steel sheet secured with M4 screw to compensate for lack of wedge stroke. Once worn out, this sheet metal piece could be simply replaced with a new one. However, proper lubrication is key.
It looks ugly, but it worked well so far.
