Breakaway Cable

The breakaway cable on my caravan had got a bit tatty so I decided to replace it. Bought one from local caravan accessory store.

I notice that new one is slightly more robust-more heavy duty than the original. Is this likely to be a problem?

I have fitted it with the large circular type spring clip to hand brake mounting, then though guide on A frame, with the caribiner clip at end for attachment to tow bar mounting.

Is this correct?

the caribina clip type can be clipped dirct to any fixing point on the tow bar,where as the spring steel clip type must be clipped back on to the breakaway cable as its possible for it to position itself in such a way that the spring steel section is resting against the fixing point & if the van comes off the ball the cable pulls against the spring steel section which then pulls out of the fixing & fails to pull on the brakes .difficult to explain but it has happened to me

Many thanks for the advice. My cable has a carabina for fitting to an eyelet on the tow bar and a circular spring clip like a key ring which is attached to the handbrake mechanism.Is this the way it should be?
