I have a particular question regarding breakdown services.
Quite some time ago I had the unfortunate experience of breaking down on the motorway whilst coming back from a holiday in Yorkshire. I called the breakdown service who came out to me and towed me and my caravan off the motorway and into a services area where the car was inspected and was not able to be repaired and we had to be relayed home. Here lies my query - my caravan is stored in Dorset and I live in London. The breakdown service would not relay the caravan to its storage location and then us to London - we had to pick a destination. I am not able to store my caravan at my home (which is why it is in storage) so I had to have the caravan and the car relayed to Dorset.
I have a very understanding storage owner who lives on site which is very lucky as we arrived at 2am on a Sunday morning - and he was able to accommodate the very late drop off of the car and caravan and then allowed us to stay the remainer of the night in the van. Later that morning I managed to hire a small car to take us all back to London leaving the keys to the broken car with the site owner who agreed to pass them over to the garage who were picking the car up on the following Monday.
This situation cannot be unique, many people keep their vans in storage and surely some of them break down whilst towing. I have asked Green Flag who were recommended by the caravan club if they could supply a servicei whereby the caravan is towed to a different location than that of the car and was told they could not do this. However they do offer a srivce where they will tow your car and caravan to your holiday destination and then pick you at the end of your two weeks and relay you and the caravan home - if they can do this service, why couldn't they take the caravan back to its storage location and the car to the home destination instead of this holiday option.
I believe the RAC now supply this option, but up until now it has been a particular worry when towing - one that could easily be solved. Perhaps it would be worth lobbying the breakdown services to see if this cover could be provided across the board?
