Breakdown Cover

I've just bought my first caravan , a Bailey Pageant Provence. As my AA membership was due for renewal I gave them a call to check that my van was covered whilst towing it, and was shocked when they advised me that they only covered caravans up to 18ft in length...according to the Bailey brochure the shipping length of my caravan is 23'10" so my van wouldn't be covered by the AA.

Is this the same for all breakdown companies ? I tried Green Flag and they told me that they cover vans up to 7m long...which is 23cm less than my van.

Anyone else had this problem, and can anyone suggest a company that will cover my car & van?

Incidentally, I also need European cover so if anyone can recommend a company that covers this too, it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hello Richard. If you are a member of the Caravan Club, then switch your Greenflag to their "Mayday" cover. This still uses Greenflag but it works out cheaper and no restriction on caravan length(mine is 7.25m).When going abroad, we use the CC "Red Pennant" rather than extend the Greenflag, as the CC offers a complete package,(ie medical, repatriation full recovery etc).

If you are a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club, you could try their 'RAC Arrival' scheme. This gives full cover for car and caravan (any length) and you can upgrade to include European cover, too. While I think you can get cheaper insurance, I doubt if you will find anything more reliable or comrehensive!

Hi Richard - As Chrissie has stated the RAC "Arrivals" with membership through the C&CC will accept caravans/motor homes of any length or weight. The majority of other breakdown services will offer a similar service but with a surcharge for vans over 18 feet in length as specialist recovery vehicles are necessary. Not too friendly at the moment with Green Flag as a result of a dispute last year which took a long time to settle on amicable agreement.

"Comprehensive" has never meant the same as "fully inclusive" - do you not get offered bonus protection and/or legal protection as extras on your car "comprehensive" policy?
