Breakdown cover

I know this has multiple threads, which I have read but I can't find an answer. Most breakdoqn policies seem to have a combined weight limit of 3500kgs, however our car is 2000kgs and the van 1600kgs mtplm.
We also usually travel with a dog, and most seem to exclude animals.

Does anyone know of a service who will cover heavier combinations and carry dogs?

Currently we are on Nationwide bldg soc cover, who have both the above restrictions.

I’m sure the CMHC policy covers heavier outfits and they allow dogs, but there may be caveats. Have a look at their policy T&Cs it’s on their website. There are members on this site with heavier cars and caravans and have dogs so hopefully you will get an answer soon.

I’ve been with the CAMC Mayday breakdown scheme for decades.
This explains their cover which is very comprehensive

But you must be happy this is also suitable for all your own needs.

I read a post on FB, in which the poster was with Mayday and had a dog. They needed car and van recovery as the car could not be repaired roadside. The breakdown operator would take the dog but not in the breakdown truck cab. The dog had to travel in the broken down car on the back of the breakdown truck. The owners objected to this. Responses to the post indicated that this is not uncommon. I have no personal experience of this so cannot comment much further.

That’s the caveat I referred to. It can be down to the recovery driver decision. My cars’ breakdown cover is similar and it’s not Mayday. Fortunately I’ve not been in a situation to test it. But I wouldn’t want the dog in the car on a recovery truck on a warm/hot day.

Dogs having to travel in the broken down vehicle has been pretty much the practice for many years.
How would it be if they turned up to assist the next unfortunate people and the cab was full of dog hairs which ended up all over their clothes?
Not everyone is a dog lover! Indeed some are allergic to them.

That happened with us twice. Dog travelled in car. Didn't seem to bothered about it. The issue for the breakdown person is that the next person may be allergic to dogs.

I am sure that if you check directly with the Nationwide breakdown company there will not be an issue otherwise there will be no customers. Our caravan was 2000kg and car gross weight was over 2800kg and we would not have had an issue. I spoke directly with the breakdown company.

However the issue is onward travel and if the caravan needs to be taken to your storage compound and the car back to your home for collection at a later date, not many breakdown companies will do this. Mayday will do all this.

I would not be overly happy with our dog in the broken down car, but rather than have a nervous recovery driver, I would have the dog in the car with windows down, enough for cool air.

I wouldn’t as even on a warm spring day the car could get too hot especially if in slow moving traffic and you are unable to get to it. It’s something you can only judge on the day wrt the particular circumstances.

Mind you some of the trucks I’ve seen the dog wouldn’t want to ride in it 😂
