Camping Cheques have a good offer with Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth to Caen/St Malo, and Plymouth to Roscoff, where the caravan goes free and you can now check prices and book on line. You have to use selected sailings - and buy three Camping Cheques, which cost £43.00.

Cost Saving Tips
We are delighted to be able to offer FREE CARAVANS on many routes - an offer which is NOT AVAILABLE direct from Brittany Ferries. To qualify you need to select specific sailings during low season (a half price caravan offer applies in high season).

Sailings with the lowest prices are generally those that arrive late from the UK or leave early from France. Free caravans are available on the following sailings:

From the UK (1/1/11 - 26/5/11, 29/5/11 - 7/6/11, 11/6/11 - 20/7/11, 21/8/11 - 31/12/11)

Portsmouth - Caen: 14:15/15:15
Plymouth - Roscoff: all departures

From France (1/1/11 - 3/6/11, 6/6/11 - 11/6/11, 14/6/11 - 29/7/11, 30/8/11 - 31/12/11)
Caen - Portsmouth: 08:15/08:30
St Malo - Portsmouth: 10:30/10:45
Roscoff - Plymouth: all departures

I've just done a 'dummy' quote using our car/caravan, and planned dates, and the total price with Camping Cheques (including the three cheques) was £312.35 - but the Brittany Ferries price was £450 for exactly the same dates/outfit/sailings.
It would be worth anyone looking at the longer crossings to check out the Camping Cheques price - and if they don't want the Camping Cheques offer them on here - there are usually ready-takers!

I have checked this out and as you say it looks prettty good. My results for Portsmouth Caen came out as :
Camping cheques £312.35 (including 3 cc)
Caravan Club £380
Brittany Ferries £480
I also looked at out to St Malo back via Caen which has been our prefered option and got
Camping cheques £493
Caravan Club £555
Brittany Ferries £600
Question for Val or anyone else who has used the afternoon ferry to Caen, is Les Pommiers site open late enough, especially if the ferry is late getting in?

Hi David - sorry can't answer that one. We've done that crossing only once, and set off straight after arrival so we haven't stayed at Les Pommiers. The campsite we were heading for (Chateau des Ormes) was aware that we would be late (two families, two vans), and put us on an overnight area with hook-up when we arrived at midnight! We chose our permanent pitch the following mornng.
I'm sure someone else will know.

Never used the Caen ferry but from replies to postings by others at least two sites Les Hautes Coutures and the Municipal in Ouistreham have arrangements for night stopovers for ferries arriving late evenings. We are booked on the afternoon sailing next year and will probably be using one of the above sites.

Thank you Val A for flagging this up. We had begun to sort out the ferry for next summer and in view of Brittany Ferries £500+ quote we had started to consider shorter crossings or even the possibility of not going

. £312 from Camping Cheques....all booked and paid for now

Hi
We stayed at Les Pommiers when we did the Caen crossing last June/July. Basic but excellent site, just 2 miinutes down the road from the ferry port, we chose a large pitch away from the road, a few pitches away from the toilet/shower block, no noise, very clean facilities. Don't be put off by the 'seasonal campers'. Quistreham is very pretty and has some lovely restaurants which are only short walk away. There is also an excellent fish market on the front near the port selling a varity of crustations so you can set up camp and cook moules mariniere for supper! The camp site is very popular with campers catching the early or late Caen crossings and stays open expecially for them.
