This is a reply that I posted back in August........

Brown Moor is one of our favourite sites. It is a short walk from the site to Hawes and there are some coffee shops, gift shops etc and a second hand book shop in which I always manage to find some good value paperbacks.

The rope makers is very interesting but you need to visit during the week to see them work. I think it is shut on Sundays but the shop is open Saturdays.

As mentioned the Wensleydale creamery is good to visit but I think the cheese making also is just midweek (not sure about Saturdays) Lovely cafe/restaurant there.

There is a warehouse on a very small industrial estate between the site and the town which has nice/unusual foodstuffs and lovely vegetables which are kept fresh in walk-in refridgerated rooms.

Wensleydale itself is lovely to visit with Aysgarth falls, lovely villages and walks and Leyburn and Bedale at the eastern end of the dale........

Sorry can't help with the route as we come through Leyburn also

Junction 38 M1, what area is that? maybe just as easy to go north on M1 and onto A1 up to Leeming Barr go left onto A684, Bedale, Leyburn and onto Hawes. Maybe a long way round as I do not have my road atlas to hand and cannot think where Jct38 is on the M1

Hi Ed, It's a great site and area as has been said. If you're coming up the M6 at junction 36. When you get to Ingleton take the B6255 to Hawes. It's a very good road for a B road. Do NOT turn off at junction 37 and go via Sedburgh as the road is very narrow in places and not recommended for caravans.

Good luck.

Just an afterthought. Leyburn, near Hawes, with it's tea pot factory and chocolate craft shop might be of interest for presents - maybe for Christmas 2009? - and the Wensleydale railway if it is running at that time of year. Also, if you are there on market day, and I cannot remember which day it is, the mobile wet fish shop is excellent especially given that Leyburn must be about as far away from the sea as you can get in that part of Britain.
