Burst pipes?

We plan to use our van for the first time this year on Friday since storing it last Sept, we drained the water tank etc but did'nt drive home with the valve open. The taps are open just now what are the chances of us having a burst pipe. We intend to try it before setting off.

There's a good chance of a leak Yvonne, not just through a burst pipe but also from unions and joints in the pipe work. If it's not a pressurised system, i.e. it uses micro switches, try turning on each tap in turn to make sure the water runs through, as it should. Don't ignore your drain system either, if water has been trapped in there, its possible a pipe may have come adrift.

The pipes don't usually burst since they will tolerate an amount of thermal expansion, especially if they are partially empty. What more often bursts are taps and filters etc which hold water with no exit, giving no room for expansion. If your taps were left open I'd be surprised if you have a problem.

If you drained down and left the taps open, you'll probably be ok but it can't be guaranteed. Plastic is more tolerant of ice expansion than metal domestic pipework. It's also important to leave mixer taps open in the middle, ie to allow air through both hot and cold.
