This might sound abit daft, but canany one tell me the weight of a 7Kg gas bottle. If the answer is 7Kg then perhaps you can tell me the weight of an empty one.

Thank you

Hello partner w/r

When a gas supplier quotes a weight, that is the weight of the fuel you are purchasing, so the 7Kg is the weight of the Butane (in this case). The weight of the bottle is extra, and in most cases will be stamped on the bottle under the title of TARE Weight.

Due to different manufacturing tolerances and designs, the weight of each empty bottle will be different, so there is no definitive total weight for the bottle and its full load of gas.

good answer. john L is spot on it will vary but a average will be about 7.5kg a few mg either way won,t matter in the grand scheme of things but dont forget the weight of the gas will also vary as this depends on who filled it?.

Hello partner & Colin

The weight of the gas fill should be correct as it is regulated under weights and measures legislation, just like petrol and beer etc.

LPG is sold by weight, not volume so the filler should be using calibrated scales during the filling process. That is why the Tare weight is stamped on refillable bottles, so the filler can be accurate with amount of LPG put into the bottle

If you suspect you have in incorrect amount of gas in a newly refilled bottle, report it to Trading Standards.

hi john L

you are right of course gas is sold by weight however not every bottle is filled to the gramme and the scales ar not calibrated after every bottle full so no 2 bottles will be exactly the same and what if the filler puts a bit too much in he cant get it out again it also depends on the temprature too cold more liquid gas too warm less liquid gas I am afraid its not as an exact science as say pulling a pint? I know I have seen them being filled.

Hello colin,

In my dim and murky past I was trained to fill LPG bottles not for resale but for use on a factory site. Even so the filling process required proper logging to meet the demands of HM Customs and Excise. Scales were checked before each filling session with a calibrated mass. The Tare weight of each individual bottle had to be entered and nulled from the scales to ensure the correct fill.- this also accommodated bottles that were only partially empty.

The training course was the same as for retail sales, and you are correct in writing the fills were not gramme accurate but they had to be better than +50/-0gm on bottle sizes 3.9 Kg and upwards. Large scale fillers still use weight but have automated systems which are more consistent.

LPG is retailed by weight specifically because the weight is not affected by temperature. 1Kg of LPG remains 1Kg regardless of the temperature, unlike volume which changes with temperature and pressure.

Retail sales of LPG are subject to the weights and measures regulations as previously described. - and trading standards should be involved if suppliers are not correctly filling.
