Butane or Propane

When I bought my caravan 11 months ago I also 'purchased' 2 full bottles of butane. I kept these both in the front locker of my 'van and throughout last year I never had to switch to the second bottle. I was obviously not using much gas having always used an electric hook-up.

When I went away in the winter I swapped to Propane purchasing just one cylinder. A mate with the right spanner changed it over for me.

So, I now have a part-used bottle of Butane, a part-used bottle of Propane and a full unused bottle of Butane. As its coming up to the 12 month rental anniversary I am wondering whether I should return the Butane and just stick with Propane.

Of the original 2 bottles of Butane I am hoping the dealer will do a straight swap of the full one with a full Propane one. I can then return the part used Butane one for my deposit back. Or is it wise to stick with one of each. Problem then is that if I run out of Propane in the middle of winter I won't have a spare.

Aaaargh. Just a small dilemma.

I would say ditch the butane. Propane works just as well in summer as butane, and works better in the winter. Some calor dealers will to a one to one swap for bottles of similar size butane to propane (this is what I did when I switched over.

we used to do the same thing, using butane in summer and propane in winter, however for the past 4 years we have just stuck to propane, the heat gains from butane are not that great anyway and you can not get calor light in butane.

im a bit confused why you think you have to return your bottles on the 12 month aniversary of renting them ? ive had some bottles for 2 years or more and never had a problem. when i last swapped my empty "heavy propane cylinder" for a calor light the retailer just did a straight swap and issued a new rental paper for the different cylinder, no further deposits where required.

When you take your full butane to be exchanged, how will the dealer know it is a full cylinder unless he has something to weigh the cylinder.

As far as he knows you could have used the gas and filled the cylinder with water !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ultimately you need to switch to using Proapane all year round. But in the short term, I suggest you switch back to butane this summer and use up both butane bottles.

Then change over to propane, and replace one butane bottle with propane. And return the other empty butane bottle against the rental according to your agreement with your supplier.

Graham - Yes, that what I didn't know. So the answer is, No, a dealer won't swap my full butane for a full propane.

John - Many thanks. I will take my used bottle of propane back for my deposit ASAP. Switch back to Butane till that is empty then exchange it for a Propane. I'll then be on propane full time.

I use just propane(Red) now whereas I used to use butane. You never know when you fancy a weekend away and this could be in a cold spell when butane will not be in a gaseous state.
