Hi, We are looking for some advice please? We are looking to buy our first caravan and have found a layout and van that suits us and our 4 kids needs. We have found a Swift Charisma 650 and an Abbey Vogue 650 both 2008 model ex- demonstrators at a local dealer for £15,470. A new 2009 model costs £15,195 plus £495 delivery. Does anyone know how much of a discount we can look to obtain bearing in mind that we do not have a trade in? Also does it matter how you pay for the van as to how much a discount you can expect? Any advice appreciated. Thanks David

Hi David, the ex-demo vans may be one year older than a new one. Model years change about this time of year, so i would expect the new one to be an '09MY whereas the demo will probably be 08. You can usually decode the VIN or CRiS number and of course the dealer should come clean and tell you. If the demo is indeed a year older than a new one would be (in this sense) then i would expect a far greater reduction. I got something around

Ex demo's can be good value, but it all depends on the deal. As has been pointed out a demo caravan may well be a year older than the vans its is representing, so as a starting point, the depreciation that a 1 year old caravan should be knocked off without any question.
Secondly, as it has probably had may people poking around in it, it will effectively be in 'used' condition. This should also cause there to be a further reduction of about 10%.
And last but not least, the VAT element is possibly up fro grabs. Some businesses can claim the whole of the Vat back for demonstration goods, as at the end of the model run the demo unit is no longer current, and its values in some financial plans is written off.
In my opinion there should be a discount of about 33% of the new book price for a one year old demo caravan- and the dealer is stall making a healthy profit.
Quite a number of respondents have suggested shopping around, and I agree but do bear in mind the costs of travelling away from your area to get what appears to be a good deal. Any warranty matter may need you to return the caravan to the place you purchased it, and if that is any great distance, factor in the cost of fuel meals, accommodation, loss of earnings, and general inconvenience. David is right go for the amount of the VAT off if it is over 6 months old.

Hi everyone, Thank you for all of your great advice. We have 3 local (ish) dealers that we are speaking to to obtain the best deal. At least now we know what to ask for and we can hopefully start caravanning in the near future.
