Buying at shows - how firm is trade-in value?

Following the thread about buying at shows - the discount is meaningless without a trade-in value for your old van. A figure might be mentioned, but how firm can this be, given that the van's not there for inspection and delivery might be several weeks ahead? I can imagine that some dealers allow for normal condition within sensible limits, but less scrupulous ones might later "find" the odd imperfection as an excuse to reduce the amount they're willing to give. If I was a dealer I'd be worried about quoting for a used van unseen. Both parties are on shaky ground surely?

I have in 33 years of caravanning only bought two from shows the last was from Lowdham and I took the swopper to pick up the new van he had a quick look and deal done. The first was when I bought a Fleetwood from a dealer in Lincoln and traded my 5 year old ABI Quartz within minutes they came and told me it had damp and knocked down the trade in price I had little choice but go with it.

I tried this two years ago, with no joy my local dealer gave me a better offer. and your comments re finding faults in your trade in van is why you may get what you think is a good deal at the show. go well prepared, know the value of your trade in van. know the full price of the van you are interested in .and try your luck.

There is a Glass' guide but it is Trade only. So What you can do is look at dealers who may be offering vans similar to you. Knock off 30-40% of the ticket price and you will be in the ball park for a trade in value. You can negotiate this up or down depending on what you are buying. If the dealer wants shot of the van (eg end of season) he will be more willing to tempt you with a trade in price. I kinda work on a price 50% of the new price after 3 years.

Of course selling privately will usually get a better price for you, but there are risks attached, namely will you actually see your money, and of course you will be swamped by the touts wanting to buy your van cheap.

Hello Bryan,

I would be very surprised if a dealer were to give you fixed guaranteed PX quote without seeing the goods. Who in their right minds would?

The usual experience is the dealer will give you an indicative figure subject to inspection.

I am not sure what Scotch lad's experience is in selling privately, but it is quite simple to ensure you get your money before releasing the caravan.

My point regarding money was that:

Bankers Drafts are no longer valid

Cheques will go bouncy

Cash may or may not be counterfeit, especially
