Hi,We usually spend our fist night in the car park at Calais Port, on our way to Spain. Now we have heard a rumour that you are no longer allowed to stay overnight in Calais Port. Does anybody know for sure if you can or can't. I heard it was because of the "Illegals". If not can somebody suggest somewhere very close. Thank you. David

We usually stay at the Aire on the autoroute near 'Aire sur La Lys' - it's quite big, usually has several other caravanners there, and in the morning you can have a shower and breakfast. Sorry can't remember the name - it's the one with the petrol station, not the quiet one you come to which is just a 'picnic stop'.

If you head out of Calais on the A16 towards Abbeville, there's an aire on your route called the Aire des Deux Caps. It has a section especially for caravans to overnight in. It's quite safe and has some great views over the Opal Coast.

Don't know about the port - haven't been since September last year. With the recent discussions about re-opening the Sangatte detention centre for immigrants, it may be possible that the authorities have closed the parking area at the port to prevent any possibly opportunities for people to stow themselves away on a truck or in a caravan.

Hi David

I was just about to ask question on the same....

I know if you drive out and then back in at Calais you can park.

I was wanting to stay at Dover and catch the early ferry out....

Our ports are pretty useless when it comes to parking unlike the french...

Hi smiley, you can get to the parking area by taking the first right as you leave the port, round the rounderbout, up to the next large rounderbout and I think it is the third exit. Check out Google Earth and you will see. I think I will follow Stuarts advice and park at the airies he reccomended as it seems nobody has used Calais Port parking this year. Best of luck. Regards David

Aire des 2 Caps is about 9 miles as the crow flies from Calais port about 14 miles by road or around 20 minutes max around Valais from the port with the van behind.

Caravan and camper parking to the right of the pumps away from the trucks.

The coffee and breakfast steak is OK as well ;-)

Dear David, (and anybody else )

The definative answer as of Tuesday 17th April 2007 is YES.

We were there on that evening on the last night of our hols.

Wandering down to the showers the following morning I counted 17 outfits using the facility.

Most of them were motorvans but there were about 5 caravans.

We encountered no problems, no one approached us and we were, for the most part at the far end of the park near to the Police Station.

Hope this helps.

Regards
