When reading of fellow caravanners' plans, I have not noticed mention of Camping Cheques. These can make a low to mid season holiday quite cheap, and can also be bought in conjunction with Ferry crossings.I've used them for a number of years and find them good value.(No, I'm not their top salesman!!)Just Google Camping Cheques.

Wishing you all a happy caravanning 2010

I think you'll find that there are actually an awful lot of people using them. We certainly do, and have done since they started about twelve (or more) years ago. On the 'Caravanning Abroad' section they are frequently mentioned in posts.

The surprising thing is that they can actually also be used on a lot of sites during the school summer holidays - although not a lot of people realise that. This year there's a couple of sites which take them throughout the holiday, one which starts acepting Camping Cheques on 14th August, five additional ones on the 15th August, and twelve in addition to all those which start accepting Camping Cheques on 16th August - after that there are lots of available sites. With any of these sites it would be possible to get a full two week holiday and still be back in time for the new term starting!

Received my Gold Card today. Loaded it up with some cheques (ouch!) and confirmed the bookings in Spain for next Spring. So ready to go. If it works at the other end as easy, then I will be dead chuffed. It works out at

It will work, Scotch Lad - it's never failed for us over the last 24 holidays using Camping Cheques (twice a year since the year they started to offer them). We've had a Gold Card for the last three or four years, but until recently bought our Camping Cheques via the Caravan Club which only supplied the paper versions. Now we too have a fully-loaded Gold Card and some paper cheques in reserve, and we're ready to go.

Only once, on one site, have we had a problem with Camping Cheques and that was at Nevers last year where their card-reader wasn't working. Fortunately we had paper cheques with us so we didn't have to hang around until it was sorted out.

We also use an ACSI card, and Touring Cheques too, occasionally.

We're still thinking of unwrapping the van at Christmas and having a short break in France - if only we can sort out the tow-bar issue on our current Mondeo. We're wondering if the one we took off the car before last might fit - if so Mr Val A might have yet another weekend job!

The nearest Camping Cheque site, unless any of the new sites added this year are nearer, is probably Les Puits Tournant at Sailly le Sec, which according to mappy.com is about an hour away.

A similar distance away to the north is Chateau du Gandspette at Eperleques - but again about an hour away. Both take Camping Cheques during the period you're going to be visiting, and Gandspette is one of our regular stop-over sites, with good pitches, immaculate sanitary facilities, particularly in the newer block, and good food in the restaurant (not gourmet quality, but their regional specialties are lovely).

I don't know about ACSI sites - perhaps worth having a look on there website www.campingcard.com - all sites are 15 euros or less.

More WW1 sites mentioned here: http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/search.asp?search=WW1+site&searchMode=allwords&searchIn=Topic&forum=7&searchSort=dateDESC&Submit=Start+Search

Actually looking at the map, Sailly le Sec (Les Puits Tournant, mentioned above) is just on the Somme river, and there are several memorials located in the area.
