I think i spelt the destination wrong!!

looking to take my first forign trip with my Avondale Landranger to France. Family are into water sports and as such we want to go surfing in Beritiz.

Anybody know a good campsite that is family and large van friendly and near to the surf (drive time or walk time)

Also would you go from Plymouth or Portsmouth?

Any advice that anybody could give would be greatly appreciated

This is in a place called Lit-Et-Mixe and is a very short drive from the longect beach in Europe(so they say). All the surfers head for this point, but I dont know when the best time of year is for the surf. The campsite is large (I have also been with same van) and well equipped. I went Portmouth - Bilbao as I had a 3 year old at the time and he could get a bit restless on long trips. If you are driving it I would think Portmouth St Malo would be best route.

Hope this helps

We stayed nr St Jean de Luz last May at Camping Bord de Mer, Erromardie - smack on the cliff top. Slightly awkward access with my van which has shipping length of 7.5M but unbeatable final position.

Agree with others that St Jean is great and so is Biarritz itself. Whilst you are there be sure not to miss the rack and pinion train ride to the top of La Rhune nearby - Egyptian vultures cruising by at eye level like floating Barn doors!

Before you commit yourself to the longer sea crossing please "do your sums". This longer crossing, particularly in the holiday season, is very expensive. Compare this to the the shorter crossing Portsmouth/Caen or Le Havre and the fuel used to drive down to Biarritz. You can drive the Le Havre/ Biarritz route in 2 days confortably, even using the RN roads, it is even easier using the autoroutes, although there are toll fees to take into account. I believe you will be " quids in" by using the shorter crossing. Driving on the continent is not difficult if you take your time and it is part of your holiday after all.

Good luck

We go most years to Pavillon Royal at Bidart a couple of miles south of Biarritz. The site is top notch and has it's own private access to the beach. There are a couple of surf schools along the beach and it's very popular with surfers and body boarder's.

We usually go Plymouth to Santander. It isn't cheap but your holiday starts as soon as you get on the ferry. Brittany Ferries new 'Pont Aven' is more like a cruise ship and now only takes 18 hours. Biarritz is then only 3 hours from Santander along the motorway.

I've travelled down and back from St Malo and Roscoff in the past but it takes too long and if your going on holiday for the surf why spend the best part of a week driving through France?

I've already booked for next August.

Thanks very much guys

You all have given me enough ideas to think about the best way to get down to that part of france.

Happy if there are any other suggestions for sites in that neck of the woods.

Cheers

I agree about Pavillon Royal, stayed there in 2002 a super campsite.
