We stayed here in October 2010 when the beach kept "disappearing" due to coastal erosion. The tides seemed much higher than in previous years. On several occasions there was a drop of over one metre at the foot of some of the steps to the beach. The problem was more pronounced towards the Playa Montroig end of the site. We are hoping to go again in September/October this year. Does anyone know if the situation is the same?

Pete,
Over the last 25 years we have often stayed at Playa Montroig, which shares the same beach. During the last 10 years or so, winter storms have often reduced the beach to a very narrow strand. To combat this, Playa Montroig constructed stone groynes, which retained the sand and maintained a decent depth of beach. However, about 4 years ago, these groynes were destroyed by local authorities supervised by the police. It appeared the appropriate permissions had not been obtained or the bribes were inadequate.

One year, we were due to go in September but had been told by friends that the beach was 'non existent'. We e-mailed the site for confirmation but, needless to say, they ignored our questions.

It seems the beach will come and go according to the action of storms but without a beach the character of these sites changes too much to take the risk. We now travel elsewhere to find not only superb beaches but also more reliable late season weather.

Many thanks for your comments vr. Someone told us last year that the owners spent a fortune importing thousands of cubic metres of sand only for it to be washed away soon after!
It looks likely that we will have to find another beach site - as you say there are plenty of other sites.
Peter
