Hi, End of July we're off to france again (We love it!). I was wondering, if someone could suggest a stop-over site around le mans that we could stay at overnight, en route from Calais to La Chapelle Hermier. I'm pulling a Twin-axle Bailey Senator, and I tend to wory a bit about access to some sites. Also en route home we're spending 3/4 days exploring d-day beaches, and was wondering if someone could suggest a site near to the normandy beaches, etc. Thanks

Hi Andy

The municipal site at Beaumont sur Sarthe is excellent. We have stayed there a couple of times, the last being about 3 weeks ago. Pitches are large, flat and easy to get into. Some are by the river Sarthe. The electric hook ups are all in the middle, so choose a pitch near one, or you might need two leads!! It is classified 3* and I payed 9.2 euros on 2 July!!

Beaumont is mid way between Alencon and Le Mans. If you approach on the N road from Alencon, turn left when you are in the village - it is sign posted. The approach through the village needs a bit of care, but not a problem.

The site was mentioned in another topic about 2 weeks ago, entitled Site near Alencon.

Have a good trip

Keith

There is a Les Castels site just on the outskirts of Le Mans - Chateau de Chanteloup - it has it's own web site which you can have a look at - it is also in Les Castels brochure and CC Travel Service in Europe Book.

Re: D-day landings - which port are you coming back from. If Cherbourg - Camping Le Cormoran is right on Utah Beach - close to St Mere Eglise and St Marie du Monts - the first village of liberty. If you are travelling backfrom Caen then Chateau de Martragny is closer to Omaha, Sword and Juno beaches and is situated just off the N13 between Bayeau and Caen. Again, this is in Les Castels book and CC Club book.

Lesley, thank you for your comments, I'll look on the net for th Chateau de Chanteloup. Re D-day landings, we can pitch up anywhere in the area really, cos we're coming up from the vendee for 4 days sightseeing, prior to making our way back to calais. I was originally thinking about a site in Houlgate, it looks pretty there, but i think it might be a bit far out for daily visits to the d-day beaches and other places of interest.

I would suggest you try Martragny then - you will be close to everything - it will only take you 50 mins to get up to Utah Beach up the N13 if you want a day out up that way. You are only 8 - 10 mins from the Caen ring road so an easy route back to Calais. The pitches are of a great size on either side of the drive leading to the Chateau. There is a pool there but if you only have 4 days and will be sight seeing you are really not too bothered about the facilities on the camp site. A brilliant supermarket (Cora) on the N13 between the site and the Caen ring road - ideal for stocking up before the journey home.

Martragny may be better for you - only minutes away from the Caen ring road so no delay in getting back on the main road to Calais. It will take you approx 50 mins from here to get up to Utah Beach for a day out. Excellent supermarket (Cora) between Martragny and the Caen ring road for all the essentials before going home.

Andy, we can also recommend Chateau de Chanteloup. We used it as an overnight stay en route from Calais to the Vendee a couple of years ago (both going and comming home). Id be happy to stay there for longer.

Martin.

Hi

We are doing the same journey from Calais to Pin Parasol, near the lake at Chapelle de Hermier. We are stopping at Chateau do Chanteloup on the way down over night - be warned that for overnighters they tend to put you on a seperate field off the normal site.

On the way back we are stopping just outside Rouen in the forest.

Cant wait ..... 3 weeks today and we will be in Dover YIPPEEEEE!

Andy - reserve a pitch on the drive (allee) at Martragny - there will be plenty of room there for access / manoeuvring with your TA. The pitches further away from the Chateau have less trees and are therefore the more sunny spots - better for sitting out in the evening.

On the outward trip they allocated us a pitch in the wood at the top of the site as it was blazing sunshine and about 90 degrees. The shade was more than welcome at the time (as was the swim in the pool I seem to remember).

We were in the 'overnight' section of the site on the way back. Still pleasant enough though and not too far away from the pool etc.

Richard, have you been to Pin Parasol before, we havent, but it looks really nice. Cant wait!

Martin thanks for the comments, by the time I get there with the three little uns in the back, i'm sure a nice cold beer and a swim in the pool, will be top of my list!
