Campsite near to easter Manchester

Hi folks

An unusual request perhaps.

Our daughter is about to give birth to our first grandchild. Cary and I are hoping to stay nearby over the coming half term (23-30 October) hols so that we can give her and her husband some help.

They live in Droylsden and we had been hoping to find a site on the easter "borders" of Manchester. I've used the campsite search on UKC but there seem to be VERY few campsites in that area.

Does anyone know of any suitable sites for us and our caravan. We would prefer to have an electrical hook up but are not bothered about other facilities. Somewhere rural with good views would be a bonus as we hope to have a break too.

Hi Tim,
You're right - there aren't many sites in this area. I don't know how close you want to be, but these two might be suitable:
Moorland CP is a residential park which also takes tourers. 01457 874348. (£14 pn for 2+EHU)
Well i'hole Farm, used to be a CL and isn't any more but is still taking vans. Basic facilities. (£??) 01457 834316.
They are both in Saddleworth. Moorland is in Denshaw and the other is in Greenfield which is nearer to Droylsden and also in walkable distance to pubs and shops.

Those are very useful "possibles". I have now compiled a list of possible sites from replies on this and other forums. We just have to await for the arrival of the baby now - hoping that it's during our Half Term hols??!!!

If you decide to use a site in this area I would be grateful to know which one and what you thought of it. We have some Dutch friends coming over next year and they want to stay near us, so some knowledge of a local site would be useful.

If its any use to you the CC club at Burrs Country Park is only 30 mins away, and it is a nice enough place to stay.

There is also a caravan club site called burrs country park in bury which is very close to the m60 and would get you to droylsden in about 30 minutes and also the added pleasure of bury market and town centre on your doorstep there is also the new rock complex with some restaurants and a cinema there

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the information, especially Jaffa's Dad who gave us extra info on Well-i-Hole Farm Campsite
We have been staying at W-i-H since last Sunday. It is a basic site next to a small river with views to the surrounding hills and moorland. There are EHUs, a water tap and CDP and that's it. The elderly owner lives in the farmouse opposite and is friendly and helpful. There are about 6 'vans pitched on grass in a line along the, fenced, river bank but some of these appear to be seasonals as there has not been anyone at them during our stay. Our mover means that we have been able to site the 'van nose in so that we have a good view of the river. The grass is reasonably well drained despite some rain. The site is just off a quite busy minor road and so there is some road noise but this is not too intrusive. The site has a gate onto the road so it is reasonably safe in that respect.
Our only reseveration is that the CDP is a bit iffy. It consists of a toilet surrounded by a low "wall" constructed from a section of large circular pipe with a water point with hosepipe for rinsing. The only problem is that on 2 occasions the "toilet" bowl has been blocked and full of poo!!! Next to the toilet is a plastic dustbin lid which seems to be covering the "access point" to the CDP "septic??" tank if one lifts that lid that it too full of poo!!! We complained to the owner as we were unable to empty our toilet tank and by the time we returned later in the day it had been sorted. Not very pleasant though to say the least.
The surrounding area is very pleasant with lots of potential for walking. The canal runs nearby and it is possible to walk along the towpath to the large village of Uppermill and on to the Standedge tunnel. There are, also, several reservoirs nearby with marked walks. There are plenty of shops, pubs, etc in the nearby towns and villages.On Monday, a beautiful sunny day, we drove over Saddleworth Moor to Holmefirth and spent a pleasant day wandering around the town.
We have not had too much time to enjoy the surrounding area as we VERY PLEASED to say that our first grandchild Oluwatosin Jessica arrived safely on Tuesday evening. Mum and baby are both doing well. Tosin (her father is Nigerian if you are wondering about the name??!!) weighed in at 6lbs 9oz after a relatively short, 5 hour hour labour. They are both home again now and in fact I am typing this at their kitchen table while Mum catches up on her sleep and Dad is out at work. Tosin is fast asleep in the lounge with Cary keeping an eye on her.
We've extended our stay for another night to help them out with the baby.
