Am on the wy home - in Alsace at the mo and thought we would break the journey at Verdun or close by. The acsi book is a bit thin around there. Can anyone recommend a nice quiet site?

We did the same last year and stopped over at a lovely ACSI site called La Samaritane, near Buzancy, north of Verdun. Excellent loos, nice pitches and if I remember correctly, fully serviced or a drain, tap and rubbish bin for every two pitches. Very quiet area BUT no mobile signal on our virgin phones.

We visited Verdun a few years back and stayed at Camping Les Breuils which is actually in Verdun itself. This pleasant site has a restaurant and swimming pool and we were made very welcome by the owners.

The site is still listed in our Alan Rogers "France" (2009) edition so it must still be okay.
It is very near to the centre of the town iand the centre is within easy walking distance. The centre of Verdun is very picturesque with the pedestrianised riverside Quai de Londres which has a number of pavement restaurants. The Citadelle Souterraine, an underground fort turned into an animated museum of how it was in World War one, is very good. The Citadelle has an English language tour which we took. The World War Battlefields which surround Verdun are very interesting and there are excellent maps and route plans available from the local tourist information office. It is a very salutory experience to be faced with the great suffering and sacrifice of the armies that fought around Verdun during WW1. There is, also, a very moving memorial to local resistance fighters and allied agents excuted by the Gestapo during WW2.

Another vote for Camping Les Breuils in Verdun. A really great family site with a lovely on site restaurant. I understand that it has changed hands recently. I notice on their website that now the minimum stay in July and August is 7 nights. We have used it on 3 trips as short 2/3 night stop overs en route to the south east of France.
Seems to be very popular with the Dutch. Easy walking distance into the town centre. Verdun is a good sized town where you will find a Carrefour (with fuel station), Lidl, Le Clerc and a variety of other shops. There are quite a few lovely restaurants down by the waters edge in the town for a nice al fresco evening meal.
The Citadelle Souterreine is well worth a visit as are the the various WW1 sites in the surrounding area - especially the village of Fleury, the Museum at Fleury-devant-Douaumont and Fort Douaumont (which is a totally different experience to the Citadelle Souterreine).
I hope that you find your stay in Verdun enjoyable.
