Car Battery Or Leisure Battery???????????

Hi All,

I was just about to buy a leisure battery when someone mentioned that a car battery would do just as well. I do have a spare car battery in the garage which is brand new and over 85ah.

My question is do any of you suggest this route of saving money or is it a false economy, I will be on a season pitch and connected to mains 24/7 so leisure battery wouold only be a back up and to run omnivent and onboard control panel.

Any advice on this owuld be a fantastic help

Thanks in advance.

Ian.

I would get a leisure battery.

Car batteries are designed to give a high output for a short time whereas leisure batteries are designed to give a low output for a long time.

Your car battery will do the job, but will it be flat half way through your week away?

Hi Rupert,

Thanks for your advice but the van will be on a season pitch so won't be moved so no problem with running out half way through.

Please keep posting your comments on this one.

Ian

If you're on a seasonal pitch, with hook-up, use your spare car battery - in these circumstances the battery is only there to smooth the supply from the on-board power supply.

Even touring, a car battery will suffice if you always have a hook-up.

In 20+ years of caravanning, I've only ever used a car battery not usually new at that - but always on hook-up. Fitting a motor mover didn't strain the 55Ah car battery - in fact a car battery will cope better with the high current demand of a mover than a conventional battery.

Occasional night off hook-up, in transit, hasn't caused us any problem - of course those who go off hook-up more than us do need a leisure battery to cope with the repeated dischages.

Hi RogerL

Thanks for your time and comment's this was my thinking but with no experience needed someone to confirm.

I think I will dig out my battery now.

Many Thanks to you all.

Ian
