Any problems with car insurance once you've got a caravan?

Does it cost more?

Does a normal car insurance cover the caravan?

is it worth taking extra cover for your caravan?

Any views?

Christine, in most instances the caravan will be covered for 3rd party risks whilst attached to the car.

It is ESSENTIAL to inform your insurer that you will be towing, even though there will probably be no extra charge, and follow up any phone call with a letter!

Additional cover for the caravan is not mandatory, but extremely wise, unless you have limitless money should an accident happen when on site, siting the van, or when not attached to the car.

For example,,,,,you unhitch the van at your destination, and the brakes do not hold it where it is intended to be and the van runs down an incline into another van,,,,,,if you do not have the extra insurance, the cost of repairs to your van and the one yours hit is down to you.

Damian - as you have said in your first line - car insurance only covers the caravan for 3rd party liability whilst towing (ie. if your caravan is in collision with a car, and it is your fault, you are covered).

So surely your biggest worry should be that if you have an accident on the road resulting in damage to your own car and caravan, your car policy will only pay for the car - and a good caravan policy is important if your 'van is of any value.

Sorry, I should have said "....if your caravan is in collision with a car, and it is your fault, you are covered for claims made against you by the other driver)."

Keith, I understand what you mean, and yes it is a problem!

Many drivers assume that their comprehensive policy covers the van as well, but in most cases it does not.

It is essential to find out EXACTLY what cover is given, or not more importantly.

As you say, a good policy is important if you value your van, but even more important if you value your bank balance if and when it all goes wrong.
