Car indicators flashing fast when caravan is unhitched

The indicators on car (Peugeot 407) and caravan work fine when hitched up. The problem arises when I uplug the 12N plug (Black) from the car which has only recently started happening. The indictors on the car now flash fast , the same as when a bulb is faulty. It appears the car is thinking the caravan is still plugged in but there are no bulbs, which makes sense. Please can someone explain why this is happening.

Thanks,
John

John does this car have a towing module fitted,or a smart bypass relay(more or less the same),or nothing i.e the 12n socket wired directly to the car lamps? As a word,if its been wired up with no towing devise, which i have seen recently on some new cars, this is seriously going to up set the body ECU.The body ECU or sometimes refered to as the vehicle ECU controls the road light functions and when the ignition is turned on carrys out a resistance check, measuring the values. It will calculate how many lamps are fitted as it is programmed with the bulb wattage.Have your replaced a bulb with a different wattage rating, and thus it,s reverting back to a default setting?

Hi we had this problem with our car (13 pin euro socket fitted). There is a micro switch inside the plug on the car which has probably stuck in the 'on' position. When you plug the caravan in to the car it pushes the switch down and it should release when unplugged. Try spraying with WD40 or similar which should help. We found out when we took ours to a trailer centre and the staff fixed it in less than 10 seconds with prodding the appropriate place which loosened it off.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I located the microswitch in the socket and it was stuck in the on position. I slid it to the off position and everything is now working fine
