Car insurance -caravan cover

I have checked with my insurer regarding a caravan I have ordered. I am told that whilst I have the caravan attached to my car the cover is not comprehensive but third party only.

I thought the third party only applied to the caravan in the event of an accident.Has anyone got any ideas about this as in the past i have always had it in my policy that I could draw a trailer or disabled vehicle.

Morganic....I would challenge your insurance company about this (or change insurers) I advised my car insurers I towed a caravan and they said it did not affect the comprehensive policy on the car but they did point out to me that the caravan was not covered for any damage on the car policy.

In certain circumstances, eg: if the caravan comes detached from the car whilst travelling and the caravan causes damage to a third party or third party property the claim they have would be against you or your caravan insurance and it would not be covered by the car insurers.

In another situation if you have a motoring accident and both your car and caravan are damaged then each would be treated as individual claims that need to be made with both insurers of the car and caravan.

Unfortunately, some caravanners do not insure their caravans at all, often due to the age of van, and the law does not require caravans to be insured seperately anyway. It is these owners who may find themselves with a heafty claim against themselves if the caravan causes damage to a third party or property because the car insurer will not accept liability for the damage caused by the caravan or trailer being towed.

Many thanks for the advice. I have been back to them and they have now confirmed that the cover is comprehensive for the car but third party for the caravan. Problem these days they all use call centres and if the infomation is not in front of them then its easier for the call handlers to say no rather than check.
