Car insurance for towing

I have told my car insurance company I have a towbar fitted - do I need to tell them I'll using it for towing?
Hope that doesn't sound too daft. Just trying to cover all bases.

It should seem obvious to them that if you have had a tow bar fitted, it would be for towing? You have notified them so no further action required.

Bearing in mind how aggressively most insurers do check for things to reduce their liability when a claim is made, for the cost of a letter or phone call I think it is wise to keep your insurer full advised, then they can't wriggle out of claim on a technicality of not knowing you are towing a caravan.

I was not aware that there were other uses for a tow bar? Probably the only reason why a the insurer wants to know if a tow bar is fitted, is because it may change the value of the vehicle. Either way it does not affect the premium.

Some families put a tow bar on the car as an aid to carrying bicycles or load boxes.

There is no harm in keeping them informed.

It was expected that you would come up with another reason! 🤣 However the tow bar could still be used for towing.
Some cars, like the Ford Ka, weren't Type Approved for towing but some owners fitted a "towbar" just so they could fit attachments to it.

As the floor pan was shared with the Fiat 500 (which can tow up to 800kgs) I suppose some would have made a Fiat tow bar fit without realising the legal implications!
That's the 2nd generation Ka - the 1st generation was based on a Fiesta platform so the same could be done.
