Car repairs or service in France

While in France recently needed new rear brake pads on Merc. M270

Dealer insisted on seeing the UK car registration document and entered all the particulars from it.

Asked why all this was necessary he said it was now policy for all foreign registered vehicles, but whether this is nationwide poilcy, Mercedes Policy or just that particular dealer network (South West France) I cannot be sure. Intention is to deter theft or to track stolen vehicles more quickly. So have the document in the car, not miles away in the caravan.

We found the same thing last year when we had to buy a replacement fuel cap. They asked for out 'Carte Grise'. I believe it is in any case a legal requirement in France to have all your car documents with you, in the car, at all times - registration document, MOT certificate, insurance certificate. The glove-box in the car always seems the safest place to keep important items on when holiday.

By the way, this was in Northern France, at an Opel dealership, so I think it must be a general requirement.

I'm not so sure about keeping registration document in car - easier to get rid of if car stollen. When in France I always insist that my wife caries this document together with passports etc in her handbag - its what a womans handbag is for is'nt it!!! However I understand the French logic in terms of checking things out.

I had a silencer replaced in Carcasonne last year and was asked for the Car certificate. When the mechanic was ordering the part he quoted particulars from the certificate I assumed so that the right part was sent
