Just bought a Swift Challenger 500 - fixed bed. Info states there are fixing points for bike carrier. Anyone any advice on what to fit to rear of caravan to carry 2 adult bikes. Also does anyone know how carrying bikes on the rear affects towing? Cheers from Mo.

Frankly, I think it is irresponsible for manufacturers to even offer cycle carriers for the back of a caravan. The weight of the bicycles so far behind the axle is a potential source of instability problems, quite apart from the difficulty one may have of achieving enough noseweight with so much at the back.

Not only that, but the carriers I have seen place the bikes quite high up on the rear panel - which can only exacerbate any potential stability problem.

It's hassle and it does nothing for fuel consumption, but often the best place for bikes is on the roof of the car.

Andrew,

Whilst in theory using a cycle carrier on the back of the caravan could adversely affect stability, if it works and your outfit is still stable, why worry?.

Grace, You very rarely see a caravan with a cycle carrier although they are common on motor vans. With my last car caravan combination (Mondeo with 1300kg Compass)I carried 2x mountain bikes on a Pendle strap on cycle carrier. Have now purchased a 1500kg van which forced a change of tow vehicle to a Freelander 2. This vehicle has a more flat rear end than the Mondeo so the carrier and bikes would hang on only by the straps rather than partly laying against the vehicle rear end thus have now invested in a Thule (bolt on) circa
