Hi has anyone laid a floor covering in a caravan (wood effect)

my carpet gets really dirty when we take our van abroad and I see

new caravans with a type of wood or canvas flooring but don't know what to buy to replace the carpet and who would fit it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Ann,

Not sure if I have undestood correctly.

Many caravans nowadays have a floor panel that comes with a laminate wood effect bonded to it. Some manufacturers leave it as is, others add carpets. If you lift your carpets what is underneath? Is it a laminated wood effect, or just plain chipboard? If the latter then you can of course fit any type of floor covering such as vinyl in any pattern you like. You would need to cut it to fit betweeen the furniture and stick it down.

My van has the whole wood effect floor panel and I can confirm it is a doddle to keep clean. A sweep with a brush and a wash down every now and then. It is also under the seats and under the fixed bed, so these areas cann be washed as well.

Hi yes. I would like the carpet taken up and a floor like your caravan floor put down. Under my carpet is chipboard What sort of material is your flooring made of, is it wood or vinyl that looks like wood.My van is quite lightweight so I don't want to make it too heavy. Thanks for your reply regards Ann

Basically the whole floor panel is one giant piece of chipboard. This is sealed on the underside and the vinyl laminate is glued to the top. That is how it is supplied to the van manufacturer and they then cut the various holes required and build everything on top. Virtually all vans for the last few years have this.

As you have read in some of the Forum Posts one concern is when the bonding process fails and water gets into the chipboard aprt. This makes the floor spongey and of course is difficlt to fix without taking the whole van to pieces.

As an afterfit idea I can only suggest the vinyl flooring out of B&Q for example. They do a range of wood patterns and this comes on a roll which you cut to fit your location. Provided it is fitted accurately and glued down it should do the trick. If you are really keen you can fit it to the underbed areas as well.

Thank you so much I will have a look at that in B & Q it would be much easier to keep clean and if I can get a good fitter I

think it will be much better than the carpet - cheers
