Just about to buy a new caravan, can anybody out there recommend a reputable insurance company that specialises in caravans. First hand experiences on claims made would be helpful. Cheap insurance is all very well, but do they settle the claims quickly and efficiently.

when we first got our 'van I trawled through all the insurance ads in Practical Caravan then 'phone bashed for hours to compare costs and benefits and ended up with Motor Caravan Insurance Agency (MCIA)- they advertise in P.C.Mag most months - so I can only suggest you do the same. You will have to have to hand all details of your 'van - dimensions, value etc. details including post codes of where the 'van is stored and security devices and CHRIS number details. Don't forget some of the gear you take away with you might be covered by your house insurance - no point in paying twice for the same cover.

I don't have first hand knowledge, but I havn't heard a bad word of Caravan Club or NFU Insurance unlike some others who have some stringent policy items in the small print.

As mike e says DYOR and look at the small print, don't just go off the cheapest.

Good luck,Brian

Again I had to make a claim when the van was damaged against a wall.

No problem at all with either claim - which in total was in the region of

I can also second the Caravan Club Insurance scheme. I managed to tip my 15-month old Senator Oklahoma onto its side on 6 February. I had confirmation in writing on 17 Feb advising that it was a total loss and that a new 'van would be provided. We pick up our new 'van tomorrow.

Whoever you take the insurance out with ( I use CC) make sure about the requirements for security .......... some companies insist that you have a wheel lock when left unattended, this means at a motorway service station ........ a real pain to put one on just for a ten min break!
