Hi all,
Im about to change a roof vent with a Heki 400 - 400
in Bailey Pageant series six and i wonder, can you lay on the roof
to clear all the old mastic and clean the opening, then to re seal
Has anyone done this with success ?
From the inside I find quite difficult.....

In the Bailey advert for the S6 there was a photo of a group of people standing on the roof so I guess you’ll be ok. I’ve been on the roof of mine several times.

If you can, find a couple of planks which will span the width of the roof and use them to spread your weight. Put a bit of old carpet or blanket under the bit where you're going to work to avoid damaging the paintwork. Bailey roofs are bonded and should be pretty strong, but it might be best to err on the side of caution.

I replaced ours myself, as a present for my OH - who hated our dark bedroom!
Once I'd taken out the old Heki it was easy enough to put a stool under the hole in the roof and get up far enough to scrape off the rest of the mastic - easier than trying to lay on the roof, I would have thought.
TIP (Which I was given at our local caravan dealer) - use those wooden spatulas that you cook with - but 'sharpen' the edge, so that it's strong enough to get under the mastic, but soft enough not to damage the roof. Soften any remaining mastic with white spirit, making sure you get every last little bit off. Use the strip mastic to replace the old, making sure that it's wide enough (I think it comes in several widths). It's not a difficult job at all and has made a real difference to our bedroom.

As an add on to Val's reply use meth's to clean away the white spirit residue in order to make a good base for the mastic
