I'm confused. The June 2013 issue of PC shows the speed limit for vehicles towing trailers with a GVW of less than 3.5t as 80 mph on motorways. I understood that , irrespective of the actual GVW of your outfit, if your vehicle was capable of a GVW in excess of 3.5t, then the motorway limit was 55mph. Is this correct? Comments would be appreciated before I set sail.

Take care ! I've always thought the French autoroute speed cameras would not 'flash' unless you were exceeding the 'solo car' limit so no problem towing. Now, however, the toll both cameras can distinguish between Class 1 and Class 2 ( solo or caravan) so maybe the speed cameras can do the same ? However, 55 mph equivalent on dual or autoroute ain't too bad a speed to get there in a relaxed manner, so no real problem.
Do however, watch urban speed limits and read up on the rules that pedestrians have absoulte priority in some urban situations. From very recent experience mini roundabouts are growing like champignons (mushrooms) around towns and it's ofter better to get on the autoroute round big cities and pay the tolls.

If your vehicle has a plated gross TRAIN weight over 3500kg then even if you are only towing a pushbike trailer you are limited to the lower speeds how ever if your car s GTW is under 3500kg then you can tow your legal allowed tow load at the higher speed

For some perverse reason, the French have decided that 'small car/big caravan' is OK whilst 'big car/small caravan' is not. The French don't understand it any more than we do, and it's obviously one of those laws that they got wrong, but it is law, and if you have a big car then your GTW will be limited to the lower limit and you'll have to stick to it!
This is all a bit worrying. Our planning has been based on being able to do a reasonable speed to cover the miles getting down to the south of France. Is this a new regulation, or has it been around for a while and we have just been in blissful ignorance?
