Hi all

Are these worth upgrading to from a standard status aerial? Are they value for money or would a proper roof aerial provide better results. The only thing that puts me off the latter is the aesthetics.

Cheers

I would agree with Chris that performance wise the 530/10/5 are a great improvement over the "flying saucer" model; anything has to be! Seriously the 530 series is a very good aerial both in its performance and practicality. You can get better performance with some elaborate domestic arrays but the practicality of using these is way less satisfactory. You need to mount them securely, so more gear to carry, work to do and with the best arrays this is no mean task achieving a rigid structure and one with little risk of it denting the roof in a storm. There is the halfway house of a similar unit to the 530 but on a pole clamped to the van but whilst this saves money it still leaves you with more hassle plus routing the cable. Your paying for practicality and only you can place your own monetary value on that.

Remember however that even with the best of aerials good reception is far from guaranteed; some sites are situated in valleys where a viable signal simply does not reach. This might improve to a degree as digital is "rolled out" but many dead spots will still remain after 2012 at remote, low population, technically difficult locations, like some of the quieter campsites.

We have both the 530/5 and a simple satellite set up. The terrestrial is tried first as is less hassle but if there is inadequate signal then out comes the satellite system; if having TV on that occasion is going to be an "essential".
