When you consider that you deliberately told us your not mechanically minded, we are then left with a further problem (which we see quite often) that the problem may be described inaccurately, or certain important technical descriptions may be misunderstood or used incorrectly, giving us false leads as to the problem. Then we discover well into the discussion new bits of information, which can change the entire virtual picture we have created in our minds. Sometimes it's like trying to knit with air.
Some of us have been professionally involved with caravans, and where possible we bring that experience to the table, but we are also more aware of some of the pitfalls of offering advice about some types of jobs where the nuances of the task may need a wider knowledge, of related issues, such as testing, safety, and legality.
We also need to bear in mind this is a public readable forum, and whilst we may be responding to your specific difficulties, we need to also remember that others (with no experience at all) may think they have the same problem, and might attempt to do the same, but get it very wrong.
Your present difficulty is a mechanical problem, and our remoteness means we cannot instinctively check the little things that become apparent through the faultfinding process when your face to face with the situation.
