There are four different types of tyre - "normal" car tyres, re-inforced, 6-ply and 8-ply. Each type has a different load rating so make sure you get the correct type for your caravan axle load.

Bob, the 94N is the load / speed rating. 94 is the load rating means 680kg per tyre giving a maximum of 1360kg axle load for a single axle van. The N is the maximum speed rating and I think N is 80mph.

There are plenty of tables available giving the ratings, just enter tyre load ratings into a search engine.

In your particular case of 94N I suspect you are looking at a 175R-13C where the R =Radial and the C=Commmercial [light truck]and you should be looking for 8ply.

This size of tyre is now limited as commercial vehicles now run on larger wheels but a good tyre outlet will be able to source some for you.

C (commercial) rated tyres can be 6-ply or 8-ply, with different ratings.

175R13 94N will be 6-ply. Load Index 94 is 670 kg per tyre, 1340 kg per axle BUT there are recommendations to leave a 10% safety margin so 175R13 94N are suited to 1200 kg MTPLM caravans.

The tyres on my van, supplied when the van was new, are 175R-13C 94N and are 8 ply. The MPTLM of the van as stamped by Explorer group is 1350kg.

Bob, you will find there is a very limited choice when it comes to 13 inch commercial tyres. There has been several postings in the forum regarding failure of Hankook tyres and the concensus seems to be to not use them.

I am not sure what premium tyres are now available but MaxMiler, I think by Avon is good. If I am allowed back on the PC after my daughter has finished chatting to her mates - she's hovering now - I'll see what a search of the web shows up but a tyre depot should be able to source some for you.

Bob, with an MTPLM of 1340kg you're right on the limit of LI 94 tyres so try to get 175R13 8-ply which will have a load index over 100.

I agree with ray about avoiding Hankook tyres - a significant proportion of caravans with blowouts have been on Hankooks.

It's difficult to find independent reviews of C rated tyres. I narrowed my choice down to Kumho or Falken which do at least figure in reviews, unlike the Maxmiler.

I got my Kumho's from www.tyretraders.com. Even adding on the fitting charge they were much cheaper than my normal supplier for car tyres.

Bob, did you get your tyres sorted out? I am changing my van and have a brand new Maxmiler 175-13C 94N on wheel if you are interested. Ray
