Caravanning close to home. How close is too close?

In a month or so Mrs Spoon has booked us into a campsite that is only a couple of miles away from where we live, in fact I drive past the place on my commute to work. This is a one off I hasten to add (and hope), and we are doing it so that the In Laws can come and see the caravan in action; FIL doesn't like driving further than the supermarket these days and I aint spending a weekend taxiing them backwards and forwards from our usual New Forest haunts. Has anyone else pitched up ridiculously close to their permanent residence or are we just wierdos?

When we bought the current van 4 years ago we put it on a fully serviced pitch within walking distance of my work place for a few nights to try it out. The OH went home during the days whilst I went to work and we both slept in it at night.

TOO CLOSE to home is on the drive, anywhere else isn't. πŸ˜‰

We stayed at The Baron of Beef , pub near Ludlow, lovely site at the back of the pub, we spoke to a nice old lady,on her own in a caravan there, in the evenings she would get in her car and drive off, after a couple of days we realised she was the owners mother and used to sleep in the pub at nights and stay in the van during the day. Must have been about 100 yards.

We sometimes take our van four miles up the road to the Whistle Inn for a night out. It means we can enjoy a great night out without driving.

we we a friends party once, just down the road from our storage site, so we had a pitch at the same site and had a lovely mini break - ok it's not that close to home - about 15 miles, but its the closest we've ever stayed.

I don't think it really matters how far away from home you are - the change of scenery can be good for the soul and knowing you haven't got to tow the van back for hours on busy roads means you can enjoy it for longer !
We are new to caravanning so our first two trips have both been within 30 mins drive of home as we have only been able to go after work on a Friday so couldn't go too far - planning to go further afield for a week soon!

Nope. We have stayed on the drive in the van at Christmas when the family had the beds in the house. Brilliant, loved it.

We did, on the driveway, at my Mother in Laws funeral, we even had our breakfast in the van, as all our bedrooms were full with family. And very nice it was too.

Well for us,,if we can drive there and back and see the place in a day it's too close to use the van,,,,However we're off tomoro for a 4 day shake down just 40 miles down the road.
As it happens there's loads to see in the area

Living in, Rural Milton Keynes, we have Very few CL or CS sites near to us, which we prefer, so normally have to go at least an hour away, which is great, You don't need to goo to far to have a great time,

Well, we could stay on our fully serviced driveway pitch which would mean only having to level and put the steadies down!
The closest to home we've been is 25 miles or 45 mins ....... great site near Melton Mowbray, adults only and we're off there again this weekend!! :woohoo:

I'm with many others on tis one, doesn't have to be far from home, as the change of scenery is nice, especially for a weekend.

You mean Eye Kettleby lakes. Been there. Very nice. I like Melton Mowbray. Great Indian restraunt there: Apura.

Yes it was Eye Kettleby Mel. A great weekend of relaxation. We did go into Melton, but only for essential supplies!
We'll be back there again, hopefully before the year is out. :woohoo:

Personally I don't think it matters how far you travel for a break in your caravan. It's still a break and can even be fun right on your doorstep! The shortest distance we travelled was an hour away from my house to Bridlington.

I've never been to Eye Kettleby Lakes. But the Wife, daughter-in-law, granddaughter and great-grandson (10 months old now) go to thire restaurant, which is open to public, for a meal. Very popular, locally, for the fishing.
Only the caravan site is adult only.
Bit to near to take my van, to close that, car would not warm up we are about ten minutes drive away.
A Chesterfield CL is about the nearest to Melton we've stopped.
Shouldn't think I live far from crazyguiders Dad πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Once the caravan is ready to roll I will be travelling only a few miles from Sheppey to Detling hill to stay at the Scragged Oak caravan site behind the County Showground.
