my friend has just got a old caravan which is in good condition but we are stuck on one thing, how do you fire up the heater. its got a trauma blower on the back,do you have to have the blower on and does the blower work on a themerstat when its working. we can hear clicking a sound from the heater when we flick the switch on the carver control panel

It should have a Fanmaster unit not a Truma unit as blower, and it has to be ON to work the electric heating.

It is temperature controlled when heating is used, manual when fan alone is used in warm weather

No Damian, it's an SBE1800 Caravelle from 1982/9, electronic controlled and it's own barrel fan on the front for direct blown air, or indeed a Trumavent fan for traditional blown air on the back.

I don't have a manual on-line for this fire but to all intents and purposes, it works the same as the Cascade mk1 water heater. Only real difference is the temperature control sensor is within the control switch and not in the water tank had it been the water heater.

You can find the manual for the cascade mk1 on my website, this then should help find the problem.

Best guess is the gas valve is not opening, (a loud 'clunk'),ameadiatly followed by the ticking of a spark for about 7 seconds, and which you suggest you can hear?

...carrying on...no you do not need the fan on for the fire to work, yes though, the fan speed if set to 'A' is controlled by a separate thermostat, the hotter the fire, the faster the fan speed but only up to the speed set on the dial.

Thanks Gary, I was hoping you would look in on the forum as your knowledge of Carver stuff is legendary.

I am much more at home with Truma, as you know.

The failure of the gas valve to open, may be the gas valve its self is faulty, or the control circuit may not be supplying the pull in current for the valve.

It could also be the connection cable or it plug onto the PCB - with an appliance of this age it could be any of the above.
