Just bought a new extractor fan for the downstairs toilet. The supplier has charged me 50p for Carbon Offset Contribution!
Never heard of it. Is it another tax

Never heard of it and may be an illegal charge. BTW we had an extractor fitted 2 months ago and no such charge.

I think its supposed to be a donation not compulsory or as you say Dusty ,it would be a tax.

If anyone can tell me how giving money (gift or tax) can offset carbon emmisions Ill give them a bag of soot, but you'll have to pay me 50p +, P&P and a contribtion to off set the carbon.

…..it is a charge, in your case on electrical goods that enables the manufacturer to make a donation to a carbon reduction programme somewhere in the world.
Eg: Planting trees in the Amazon.
This the manufacturer believes will offset the carbon he creates in making the product and will promote his brand etc.
He seems to have failed in that regard !

Seriously, though,
I do agree that we need to reduce our impact on the world.and manage it resources far mare sparingly, it actually malke good sence to recycle etc.
If the manufacture is making a seperate charge to us so he can then pass it on then the manufacture is not making any contribution, its just us gulible punters.
Does any one have any evidence thais money is actually being used to plant trees. Or is it just another synical method to extract more money from us?

Carbon Offset contributions are supposed to be voluntary and somewhere on the order for the fan would be small print advising that a 'voluntary' contribution would be levied unless the customer opted out, usually via a tick box.
Carbon Offset is being taken over by big business because the market is said to be worth some $70 billion according to a major international finance house
If Professor John L would allow one of these corporate giants to handle the transaction with regard to the bag of soot then he should hope to receive a Christmas bonus

The soot is a free sample but money still needs to change hands so that you can offset your carbon.

I had to burn a lot of fuel to make it. If someone wants it ther'e going to have to pay top dollar for it. - Don't forget inflation is making it more valuable every day, and after all its only crushed diamonds.

It was you who offered to give the soot away Prof, I'm merely offering to, ahem, 'invest' the carbon offset charges which should make everyone feel less guilty about the soot transference trade.
If you happen to tread in the soot so that you have a sooty foot does this increase your carbon footprint?

The LandRover brochures and price lists all include such a 'contribution' - rather more than for an extractor fan.
Would be interested to know if anyone has challenged this when buying and if so, with what result.
