Carver 18000SC Space Heater Failed

So we bought a 1998 Bailey Ranger 440/40 Carvan last year and it is fitted with a Carver 1800SC space heater and a fan master controller. We tried to use the space heater during the winter and it's refusing to work via gas and eletric.

When the fan master is set to gas and we try to ignite the gas fire it will ignite and stay lit as long as i keep the control knob pressed down but as soon as i release the control knob, the pilot light goes out. I repeadelty done this from 30 seconds to about 3 minutes... with no luck. So i read that the space heater can use electricity to function also... so i switch the fan master to eletric and turned the thermostat up high, left it running for an hour and we had no heat. The fan will blow cold air when trying to use both gas and eletric heating functions but we just get no heat.

I would really appreciate some help on how i can fix the gas and/or electriccal heating as its currently just a dust collector with no function at all haha.

Please Help 🙂

At 28 years of age I fear you may struggle to find someone conversant with that make and model of heater. In addition I wonder what the spares situation will be like. Hopefully I wrong on both fronts 🤞

This will explain quite a lot about the heater

Dealing with the obvious I assume you are connected to the mains via an EHU? Have you checked the 13 amp fuse feeding power ?

Please be fully aware any gas appliance which is not correctly and professionally repaired may lead to carbon monoxide release causing silent death!

Did you know the flue gasket MUST be replaced every time the heater is removed from its position? Plus many other factors that only a professional will know.

As suggested above I recommend you get a mobile caravan engineer to sort this for you.

You know when you start wrong - do don't go far right! I completely mis-read the OPs post ( I had been reading an engineers post on another forum about a whale space heater he was working on). The Carver unit has separate controls for the fan , electric heating and gas controls. Starting with the gas , if the pilot flame goes out on release of the gas control knob then the connection to the gas valve from the thermocouple is faulty, there is a small electromagnet in a capsule inside the gas valve. The case of the capsule is aluminium and it can oxidise so electrical contact is lost , sometimes simply removing the thermocouple and capsule out of the gas valve and cleaning off the oxidation and re-assembling it cures it, but working on the gas requires a competent gas engineer who can perform the necessary safety checks after reassembly to ensure the system is safe. The thermocouple connection can be accessed from underneath without removing the assembly, but its not a nice job and due to the fact the assembly is relatively open to the elements it will be difficult to unscrew the various nuts and screws. Re the electric control , the pcb is mounted on the large fan housing, there are no fuses on this pcb , so it may have popped the supply fuse in the outlet spur due to a fault on the pcb , You still can get the pcbs and some heater assemblies , also there are various repair companies out there who offer a repair service.
