Can anyone help me with a problem I have with my water heater?

I have just bought a 1998 Compass Rallye and I'm going through all the systems to make sure they work. The water heater doesn't seem to work on gas ( haven't had mains on it yet ).

When I press the On button, the green light comes on, but the burner doesn't appear to come on. There is no clicking sound from the igniter either. But, the Flame Fail (red) LED doesn't come on.

The only answer I can find on line, or in the manual, is that the unit is unplugged, but is this really likely? So, I'm wondering if there is another cause for this issue?

I've discounted a gas supply problem as that would (should?) bring the red light on.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hello Ted,

The symptoms you describe, strongly suggest the burner control module has developed an electronic fault.

The fat that the red light does not come on yet you can hear the clicking (the igniter) support my conclusion.

Hopefully Gary frmo ARC systems will respond also. He has a wealth of knowledge and will now what spares are available.

Ted, how have you concluded that the heater is not working?

The igniter is very quiet in operation.

Can you feel any heat coming from the exhaust outlet on the outside of the van?

Assuming that there is no heat, and that you cannot hear the ignitor, then there are 3 possibilities.

First and most likely is the burner module at fault, but replacement modules are still available.

Second is that the cable from the wall switch to the burner module has become undone at the burner end, it will be either a Molex plug or a DIN plug, situated center underside of the tank on the back of the burner module.

Lastly is the wall switch is faulty.

Simplest answer is to get a mobile guy to come and sort it out.

Well, wall switch seems OK. Plugs are on and I've got voltage at the heater.

Opened the burn unit up and checked the internal fuse, that's OK, so it must be a faulty burn unit.

Time to put the dealers warranty to the test ;-)

You have found the fuse and say it's ok but is it? no use looking at it as the always blow behind the metal caps, also the fuse holders are rubbish, make sure both sides have a firm grip of the fuse.

Warning, the module is held on the right and hangs down to the left, to ensure the seal is doing it's job;

before you finish tightening the screws, lift the left hand side until the bracket and seal is as high as it can go, (without force), and parallel to the recess in which it fits
