I have a 1998 abbey Iona vogue in good condition - on a recent trip I attempted to ignite the carver space heater on gas without success - it is the fanmaster type which runs on gas or electricity - its either an sb1800 or sb2000 - do you think that it requires a new pp3 battery for the piezo ignition - any suggestions welcome

By 1998 carver were no longer supplying the SB1800, and there never was a SB2000, there was an SD 2000 which was hardly ever sold in the UK. Its more likely you had a Carver 2000, and the majority of those were ignited by a piezo unit that does not use batteries. Piezo ignitors use the electrical power generated by a spring loaded hammer striking the piezo crystal. No external battery is required.

IF you are having trouble with ignition, check that the ptfe cable is connected to the tag on the end of the ignitor, if that does not resolve the problem, then it it probably needs the heater to be serviced, by a competent person.

Following on from john, you will have the carver 2000 fanmaster, the little brother to the 4000/5500 mk2 fanmaster range. The actual fire used on yours is the 1800SC as launched in mid 95
Most, as said, used simple piezo manual ignition, however some were fitted with electronic ignition powered by the vans battery.
So if you need to press down on the knob to get one spark, thats manual, if though just turning the knob from off position gets a constant spark, then that's electronic.
Apart from either of these not producing a spark, common reason for poor or not lighting is gas valve problems and or simple user error in some cases?

HEllo Meil,

If you have had air in the gas pipe to the space heater =, then its highly likely teh same applies to the fridge. Just be aware that it can take quite a while to purge the air to the fridge as it uses quite a lot less gas then the space heater

Just to clarify - my carver 1800 has manual piezo ignition - I assume that I press down on the gas knob and rapidly press the red piezo button - I have tried this on several occasions however I cannot see a blue flame in the inspection window - should I be holding in the gas knob for considerably longer before pressing the red button - obviously I have the gas knob on the high setting

It takes a fair while for the air to clear when the knob is pressed - but - it's a long time since I had a 1800 and I seem to remember putting the knob in position 1 then pressing down when lighting.
