hi, I don't know if any one can help, I have sited our caravan for three months on a site that only has 6 amp hook up. on arriving the heater worked fine for a full week no problem.

but last weekend ( two weeks later ) when I got to the van after switching on the electric I switched the water heater on. I think this could be the cause, I had not run the hot tap to fill it, I assumed it would still have water in it from the week before. if it was empty do they have a safty system to stop the element blowing ??

As soon as I try to switch it on, it blows the trip at the hook up and also blows the trip in the main power point in the office.

Any ideas

Thanks

Lee

By 'trip' I assume you mean the RCD and not the 6Amp MCB (fuse) feeding your van?

This then means the element is shorting to earth.

Why though is difficult, it worked ok until you forgot to fill the tank, this caused the elements 'over temperature stat to trip out and requires you to reset it by pressing a red button?

You don't mention pressing anything?

Very early elements circa 1990 had a 'thermal fuse' to protect from overheating, this simply blew and required replacing.

Both then should not be connected to mains until you've given some attention so should not be able to trip anything?

It leaves me wondering how the element is connected and if in the past anything has been tampered with?

Did you manage to resolve your problem, I'd be interested to know, cos we have had a similar situation. Arrived on site and electric water heater kept tripping the electrics, we switched it off and heated the water by gas, but haven't worked out what the problem is yet.
