Carver Water Heater Problem

Hi Everyone,

I have a problem with a Carver water heater on our year 2000 Abbey 216, when I run the pump with the hot tap open, nothing comes out of the tap, I can hear the pump running and water comes out at normal pressure on cold. When I open the drain plug to the heater water drains out, if I run the pump with the hot water tap open and the drain plug removed water comes out the of water heater drain. I've taken the pipe off from the out going side of the water heater and nothing comes out when the pumps runs. I have poured a cleaning solution into the outlet side of the water heater and pumped the same solution into the inlet side, as there was quite a bit of, what looked like limescale, that came out when I openend the drain plug. Our van hasn't been used since New Year, but was completely drained down after it's last outing.

Does anyone have an idea what may be causing this problem?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Steve

Your about 95% there in diagnosing the problem or rather you have already eliminated the other possibles. The most common cause is a sticking non-return valve which is part of the cold water inlet.

When you say you had water running from the drain hole while the pump was running, did it spray out something like a foot from the van as opposed from dribbling out much the same as with the pump off?

A quick test is to do as you did and using a long slim screwdriver, wiggle it's tip about at the far end of the drain bung hole. This is where the seal of the non-return valve is and the wiggling often frees it while being pushed by the pressure from the water pump.

If this increase the flow substantially then it may work fine but perhaps it's simply best to replace the cold water inlet

Thanks Gary for the advice,

I will give that a try this weekend. When I ran the pump with the drain plug removed it did just trickle out with the same pressure as the pump not running. Is it a relatively straight-forward job to replace the cold water inlet?

Thank you,

Steve

How long is a piece of string Steve?! if you can get at it and the old one unscrews then an easy 10 minute job, if you cannot get at it and/or as often happens, the fitting breaks while trying to unscrew it, then no it's not so easy!
