carver water heater

cascade mk 2 water heater i have drained it due to a problem with non return valve cold re-inserted new valve turned power on and opened hot water tap to get a flow success..however i cannot work something out ...if i drained the heater there is no water in it right when i attach pump into aquaroll and open hot water tap pump comes on and straight out the tap..is there any water in the tank as it was previously emptied by me and all i am doing is pumping from aquaroll straight thro the heater and out the hot tap..sorry bit long winded cant get my head round this

russell, assuming you have not managed to somehow swop the hot and cold supplies somewhere then the heater must be full. There is no direct connection between the heater cold inlet and the heater hot outlet so you can only get water at the hot tap if the heater is full.

When the tank is emptied and because the pipe work to the hot taps is lower as it runs along the floor this water will stay in the pipes. On filling the tank water coming in at the bottom will force air out along the pipes and this in turn will push the water from the pipes out of the taps. By this time the tank is getting somewhat full so the delay before fresh water comes through is not so great as you would expect. However you should get plenty of 'spluttering' until the tank is truly full.
