Could someone please be so kind as to explain how the water heater works please? Caravan is 1990 Lunar Meteriorite and it has a carver water heater. Now ,if I switch everything on ie gas, heater on zig unit, there is a beige coloured carver box. If I switch this on the heater ignites, (and I have seen smoke from the outside) with a green light showing, but what are the other lights for? Earlier I had the green and yellow lights on, what is the yellow for and what would it mean if the red came on as well? Apologies for this post but am a caravan virgin!

Mark, firstly when the cascade water heater is working you should definately NOT see smoke outside.

If it is cold and wet maybe a bit of steam as the unit dries, but otherwise it should burn cleanly and you should only be able to feel the heat of the exhaust.

If you saw smoke it needs urgent attention as it is not working correctly.

The lights:

Normally if all is well, gas on, isolation valves open to the heater and a supply of gas, then starting the cascade you should only have a GREEN light showing that it is functioning.

The RED light indicates a flame failure, maybe just run out of gas, or a problem with the burner.

The AMBER light is a low volts indication, that is the battery or power supply is not a minimum of 12v DC.

Thanks for that Damian, it most prob was steam that I saw but the van hasnt been used for about 18 mths so (i just bought it) so maybe had some muck on the burner. I could feel heat from the outer vent, and the water got slightly warm from the tap. Do i have to switch it on and leave to warm up or does it warm on demand like an electric shower?

Mark, it has to be left on, at least about 40 minutes before you want hot water.

The tank capacity is 9 litres so not much to play with!!

I am assuming that it does not have electric heating as well?

Thanks again Damian, no there is no electric heating, just the gas fire, although we will probably take a small fan heater with us for now.
