Jaybee,

Park Coppice is a woodland site. The pitches tend to be in clearings with a couple of open pitching areas.

The site borders the lake and there are some lovely walks from the site.

Facilities are usual Caravan Club standard.

Some nice pubs in Coniston serving good food.

Jon, we were at Park Coppice in Oct 05. I must say I didn't care for it very much. The trees are very tall so sunlight didn't dry out the wet ground very well. I thought most of the pitches were quite small. I also thought the facilities (3 toilet blocks) were a bit tired. I would say they were NOT to the usual CC standard. From our point of view, travelling from the north, it makes more sense to go to Troutbeck Head rather than go all the way south before turning north on the recommended approach to Park Coppice. Roads are a bit narrow but not for too long. Narrower for much greater distances coming from Ambleside. Nice walking in the area and easy access to Coniston Water. Hope this helps.

Hi Jon,

Like Malcolm L, I did not care much for this site nor did I care much for the nervous holiday drivers who drove on the centre of the drystone-wall lined narrow roads without much thought for caravanners coming towards them. Every lay-by and verge seemed to be clogged with parked cars while their occupants went walk about.

Troutbeck leaves Coppice Wood in the shade - literally!

We've stayed at Park Coppice once, a couple of years ago, (without kids) and more recently Troutbeck Head a few times with kids. (2 girls, 9 and 5 yrs). Troutbeck is by far the better site. Park Coppice is very shaded, and if you have kids, play area and toilet blocks can be a bit of a hike depending on your pitch. Troutbeck is nice and open, lovely views, and a shallow stream running on the edge which our kids loved paddling in! Roads are much easier to get there, and Keswick is only 8 miles away, where there's loads to do. Hope this helps!

I would agree Troutbeck Head C.c. is an excellent site. In our opinion far superior to Park Coppice. We have stayed many times at all times of the year. It is especially nice at Chrismas and New Year as because you are over 1000 feet above sea level it usually snows. There are many pitches which face Blencathra ( Saddle Back).

There are some serviced pitches at the top end of the site.

You can walk out of the top of the site into the forest with wonderfull walks.

If you go to Troutbeck make sure you take plenty of long rock pegs because due to it's height above sea level and it's openess when the wind gets up you need your awning peged well down. I have spent many times at Troutbeck rescueing awnings.

The toilet blocks with their underfloor heating are excellent.

If you go in the height of summer, assuming we get one, i would not pitch by the stream if at all possible because of flies.
