i know this has been covered hundreds of times.

i have just returned after being away from the 28th - 2nd to a cc site and was very angry after speaking to the warden, she said she had 10 no shows and had turned lots of people down all week because they were fully booked. why do people book up and then not turn up, bring back booking fee i say. i am glad we got booked up as we really enjoyed our holiday and the party the wardens put on for us was great

The CC comment in their magazine this month and according to them they have no higher percentage of no shows than those who charge a deposit so obviously some don't care about the money.I guess they just wait to see what the weather looks like then decide.

Particularly annoying though when you know the demand at Christmas was higher than the the supply of pitches.

Hi Jane,

I think these people who do not show on a booking are the up you Jack types, very selfish, and couldn't care less attitude, personally I don't believe that they are true caravanners.but then I would very much hope that we genuine caravanners outnumber those people.

A Very Happy New Year to you Janeand to all true caravanners.Jim

I have made bookings in the past and then cancelled at least 1 week before I was due to go and I am thankful for the no penalty system operated.

However to be a 'no show'and not to cancel with at least a days notice should in my opinion be a justifiable case for charging a penalty fee or preventing further bookings.

Hi Jane,

Not all who cancel are 'couldn't care less' types. For the first time ever we decided to go away for the weekend between Xmas & New Year.It was difficult to find a location but we found one in the end.We were due to arrive on the Fri night.

However during Thursday night the weather took a turn for the worst, with heavy rain and high winds. We decided for safety reasons to cancel our trip( which we were looking forward to).First thing Fri morn I cancelled.

In 20 odd years of caravanning I have only once cancelled, apart from now, and that was because of foot and mouth.

Please do not tar everyone with the same brush.

Pat,

No-one is getting at people who cancel. It's the ones who make a booking but DO NOT CANCEL who cause so much anger.

No-one these days is too far from a telephone, but it seems that courtesy/good manners aren't necessary these days.Hospital appointments/GP/dentist appts all have the same story.Surely it isn't asking too much of anyone to pick up the phone and give someone else a chance.

I am a CC member and would like the Club to take this issue seriously, but the article in the latest magazine suggests that they aren't too bothered about it.

Pat i am not getting at the people who phone up and cancel its the ones who dont phone or turn up that annoy me a quick phone call to the site is not much to ask anyone for as Maureen says it is only courtesy or good manners and surely everyone has these.

thanks to everyone who has taken time to answer my post and a happy new year and a good year of caravaning to everyone

No-shows and those who cancel without a good reason or often should have their right to book in advance removed or even their membership suspended for a period of perhaps 6 months.

Also, there should be a ban on booking more than one site for the same date.

It is a very simple and effective way of dealing with the problem but no doubt there will be many who think its too strict.

I also doubt that the CC has the *alls to enforce such rules.

The online booking service doesn't allow you to book more than one site for the same date, therefore it would probably apply if you rang a booking through too.I would think it would be quite easy to impose a block on advance booking for regular offenders.

Now that would be a good solution !

I have a friend with a CL in the north of England. Two years ago a family booked the whole five pitches for Easter, so he turned away 16 others. You can guess the rest.Yes, that's right. 16 other campers disappointed, and Dave

This problem could be avoided if the deposit charged was equal to fifty percent of the night fee this would amount to a fair amount of money, but if you are going the balance when turning up on site would be far less.

Refunds could then be varied with the amount of notice of cancellation, the reasons given ( proof could be requested under certain conditions) No shows would lose their whole deposit.

I know that this is somewhat unpopular but at least people would cancel earlier and possibly prevent people making bookings ' just in case ' and possibly create more pitches for other people who may not be able to book so far in advance

I really am surprised at this subject comes up time and time again. Don't any of you read what the Caravan Club say about this subject? No shows are followed up with the threat of having their membership closed if they persistantly cause a problem. People who cancel do so for all sorts of reasons and often at this time of year its mainly because of illness. The Club have clearly stated that the problem was worse when they took deposits. They also point out that it would cost a six figure sum to install the IT require to take deposits. Personally I would prefer that money invested in new sites.

So the 'illness' prevents them all speaking into a telephone?????
