Champion towcar

Just wondering whether anyone has done a survey on the best ever towcar?

I don't mean the annual awards...but proper lb for lb towing capability.

Obviously a Shogun/Disco will be able to tow more than, say, a Fiesta...but are there any stats on which cars are able to 'punch above their weight' so to speak and give better pulling performance than others in their weight ranges?

In my view, this is exactly what the Tow Car of the Year competition should be doing - open to any car in production, grouped by weight and tested with caravans at 100% - this would give us a very clear idea of the best, and worst, towcars.

Sadly in reality, TCoY is just a PR exercise to promote new models that makes comparison to existing models very difficult.

My Civic 2.2 CTDi pulls fantastically mainly down to a lowish kerb weight (about 1360kg) and 250ft/lb torque mated to 138 bhp.

In the real world (when not towing, eg 90% of the time) it will also do over 60 mpg if you try. Possibly one of the most important facts these days.

In my opinion the vw sharan, seat alhambra, ford galaxay trio mustbe a top runner for this award.

Good 1800kg kerbweights and towing limits with a gutsy diesel that will do over 40mpg solo and reasonable road tax.

Why buy a 4x4
