Changing Rollers on a Caravan Mover

The caravan mover (Carver Caravan Mover 2, 1999 vintage) requires the mover rollers to be changed. Just ordered up a set and I am looking for any hints or tips to complete the job.

My mover is a Powrwheel - but it's a simple job to change rollers. Remove three set screws holding the end plate. Pull out the roller from its drive and replace with a new one. Put the end plate on the spigot and replace the screws.

Hi John,

many thanks for the reply. The roller on the Carver is held in a similar way. The end plate is held in place by two bolts holding a central spigot which the roller fits over via a bearing. The inboard end picks up with a pin through the shaft. Just hoping after all this time it has not siezed in place, best soak it in WD40 (or similar product) before attempting to pull it apart.

Colin, I did this last year, the whole job took 10mins.

Just remove the end plate by removing the two bolts, if the original rollers are stuck a sharp tap with a light hammer will loosen them and the new one just slip on to the shaft. You have to align the groove to the rear of the roller when replacing.

The early Powrwheels are far from easy to change, so if any of you are thinking of changing the rollers on an older Powrwheel model I would advise you to phone Powrwheel first. Even for their fitter, it was not at all simple - but, once done, the new metal rollers are a great improvement.

I changed my early model Powrwheel rollers about 2 weeks ago as the grit layer was shedding. The first side I replaced (near side) came off the shaft just by pulling with my finger-tips. However the offside put up more of a fight. I tried the advice given by Powrwheel - tap the end with a rubber mallet. After several attempts which didn't work I resorted to a metal hammer. This didn't work either, so the last resort was to lever off gently with a screwdriver shaft. Total time taken to replace both rollers was about 15 minutes.

I should have made clear that there were two types of earlier Powrwheel. You are quite right that one was easy to change - like the later models. The other one was far from easy and you would have needed more than a hammer!

Hi all,

Made the time today to change the rollers. Alas not the 15 minutes per roller that I thought it would be. - Undo two 13mm bolts, slide off old roller, slide on new roller, fit end plate, do up two 13mm bolts and torque load.

Undoing the bolts was the easy part, following two days of soaking with WD40 the rollers would not shift - not been off in ten years, so well rusted on.

Upshot - jack caravan, position on axle stands, remove wheels, use hammer, chisels and junior hacksaw finally removing the first roller in two n half hours.

Replace with new roller, fully greased up inside in an effort to prevent rusting up. Second roller took less time using lessoned learnt from the first one.

Top tip for future: Remove rollers at yearly service and grease up inside to prevent rusting up, thereby when needed to be replaced it is a 15 minute job each side.

Hope this helps someone plan there own job on an old set of rollers.
